Are Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara married? Here’s what netizens think of his ‘wife’ statement

Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara have sparked wedding rumours as the former called his partner “wife” during a podcast interview. Joaquin and Rooney have been together for a while now.

While promoting his latest film, Joker 2 co-starring Lady Gaga, Joaquin said on the Talk Easy podcast with Sam Fragaso that Rooney is his “wife” while discussing his 2020 Oscars speech. 

When Joaquin called Rooney his "wife"

Joaquin Phoenix said that he got the inspiration for his acceptance speech while he “was talking with my mom and my wife.” 

He then confirmed that he was indeed talking about Rooney Mara as his wife because he took her first name in the next sentence. He recalled, “Rooney was like, 'That's what you should say!'”

This is the first time that Joaquin has addressed Rooney as his wife. He has meanwhile, not issued any clarification on his marital status.

Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara first met in 2012 while working on the set of Spike Jonze's drama film Her. Possibly some sparks flew but they later worked again on the set of Mary Magdalene. In 2017, they made their relationship public and went on to get engaged in 2019. 

Joaquin and Rooney keep their relationship ultra-private. In 2020, they welcomed their first child together, River. Earlier this year, the couple announced that they were expecting their second child.
