Jammu and Kashmir has been hit by a cold wave at the start of the winter season. The temperatures across the Kashmir division have dropped drastically in the last 24 hours. Not only the higher reaches, but Srinagar also recorded the minimum temperature in minus degrees.
The cold wave has tightened the grip across the Kashmir Valley, with temperatures falling below the freezing point across various districts. Srinagar recorded the minimum temperature at minus 0.4ºC, while tourist destinations like Pahalgam were at minus 3.2 and Gulmarg at zero degrees. "Winter has already begun with regard to the temperature. Subzero temperatures have been recorded in the hill stations for the last few days. In the plains also, the temperature has come down to minus degrees. In the coming days, till 22nd the temperatures will go further down to minus 1.5 in the plains. And 25th onwards, the temperature in Srinagar will go down to minus 3, while in the higher reaches the temperature will go down to minus 5. The winter has already started, and there will be a brief spell of rain and snow from 23-24th of November," said Mukhtar Ahmad, Director Met, Kashmir.
The lowest temperature in north India has been recorded in the Ladakh region. The temperature in Ladakh fell abruptly, and the lowest temperature recorded in the region was at Nyoma at minus 13.1 degrees. In Leh town, the temperature was recorded at minus 6.6 while in Kargil town it was recorded at -5.9°C. Drass recorded the temperature at -8.9 degrees.
The MeT Department has predicted a wet spell from November 22-23 and said that the temperatures will drop further after November 25th. Weather experts have already warned of severe weather across the region.
