India signed a contract worth Rs 21,935 crore with European plane maker Airbus in September 2021 for 56 planes to promote self-sufficiency in defence manufacturing. The programme is being jointly executed by Airbus and Tata Advanced Systems Limited. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation of the Vadodara facility in October 2022.

The Tata Advanced Systems facility for manufacturing C-295 aircraft will be the first private sector final line for military aircraft in India. As per the agreement, 40 aircraft will be built in the city’s facility, and Airbus will supply 16 aircraft directly by August 2025. The facility will be manufacturing 40 aircraft in the country, marking India’s first private sector assembly line (FAL) for military planes.

It also involves a comprehensive ecosystem, from manufacturing and assembly to testing, qualification, delivery, and maintenance of the full life cycle of the aircraft. The planes are believed to improve and enhance the Indian Air Force's abilities to meet the mission requirements. Along with Tatas, famous defence public sector units, like Bharat Dynamics, Bharat Electronics, and several other small and big enterprises, will join hands to contribute to the programme.
