Pradhan was returning the fire when he said Gandhi and his ilk were shedding 'crocodile tears' over the issue as UPA had a far worse record in conducting fair examinations

India's Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan launched an attack on the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, for his remarks over alleged leaks in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) 2024. On the first day of the Monsoon session of the Parliament, Gandhi pointed towards Pradhan and said the Education minister was blaming everyone but himself for the mess created in the examinations.

Pradhan, returning the fire, said Gandhi and his ilk were shedding 'crocodile tears' over the issue as UPA had a far worse record in conducting fair examinations.

"The LoP and his cabal are all but shedding crocodile tears. The ground reality on paper leaks during the UPA regime and when Shri Akhilesh was at the helm of UP, will open a can of worms for both Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav," Pradhan wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

"Maybe Rahul Gandhi understands the fundamentals and maths of unfair practices too well. That explains why the Congress govt. failed to implement the bills to stop malpractices in educational institutions, including the Prohibition of Unfair Practices Bill, of 2010," he added.

What did Rahul Gandhi say?

Having been out of action the last week or so, Gandhi returned to action and immediately went for the jugular.

"The minister has blamed everybody except himself. I don't even think he understands the fundamentals of what is going on here... the issue is that millions of students in this country are extremely concerned about what is going on and who is convinced that the Indian examination system is a fraud," Gandhi said.

"As this is a systemic issue, what exactly are you doing to fix this issue at the systemic level?," he asked Pradhan.

"Millions of people believe that if you are rich and you have money, you can buy the Indian examination system and this is the same feeling that the opposition has," Gandhi said while demanding a separate one-day discussion on the matter.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court Bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud continued its hearing into the case on Monday and ordered the director of the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT Delhi) to set up a three-member panel of experts to review a contentious question from the NEET-UG 2024 medical entrance exam.

The National Testing Agency (NTA), responsible for conducting the exams, had awarded grace marks to certain students as the question purportedly had multiple correct answers.

The apex court ordered the expert opinion to be placed before it by 12 noon on Tuesday (Jul 22).
