The new Genmoji feature, a part of the broader Apple Intelligence AI framework, will only be available on the iPhone 15 Pro and later, recent iPad models, and Mac computers with M1 chips or newer
At its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024 on Monday (Jun 10), tech giant Apple, in partnership with OpenAI, rolled out ‘Apple Intelligence’ with a slew of artificial intelligence (AI)-powered features, including its highly anticipated custom emoji creation tool, Genmoji. Here’s all you need to know about the emoji instrument.
Genmoji, short for “generative emoji”, lets iPhone, iPad and Mac users describe the emoji they want and generates unique, personalised emojis using AI.
Although iOS currently offers a sizable library of nearly 3,800 standard emoji to choose from, the new Genmoji capability will provide greater flexibility to users by tailoring them in line with the user’s taste and choice of expression in conversations.

"We already offer thousands of great emoji for our users, but now with Genmoji and the power of Apple Intelligence, the possibilities for creative and personalised expression are endless," said Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering, during the WWDC keynote.
The new Genmoji feature, a part of the broader Apple Intelligence AI framework, will only be available on the iPhone 15 Pro and later, recent iPad models, and Mac computers with M1 chips or newer.
However, it will only become available to users running iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia when those operating system updates are released this fall.

Users will simply have to provide a text description, such as "Smiley relaxing wearing cucumbers" or "T-rex riding a skateboard while wearing a tutu," and Genmoji will create the custom emoji, providing multiple design options to choose from.
The AI-powered feature even allows making Genmoji based on photos of friends and family in the user's library. The custom Genmoji can be used inline in Messages chats, as sticker images, or as Tapback reactions.
