RCB, playing in their third IPL final in 2016 lost to David Warner’s SRH which still haunts the franchise as they are yet to taste success in the competition. Recalling the memories, Rahul reckons had he or Virat stayed longer on the field, RCB could have won the final for RCB.
Star India wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul has opened up on the famous Indian Premier League (IPL 2016) final between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) where he shared the dressing room with Virat Kohli. RCB, playing in their third IPL final lost to David Warner’s SRH which still haunts the franchise as they are yet to taste success in the competition. Recalling the memories, Rahul reckons had he or Virat stayed longer on the field, RCB could have won the final.
“It’s a long time ago, but it’s still fresh in my memories. I and Virat (Kohli) always talked about it a few times that 2016 is always a reminder that had one of us played a little longer, it would have been very different. It would have been a fairytale to be right at the bottom to win seven games to qualify and then win the final at home,” Rahul said on a show on Star Sports.
Chasing 209 runs to win the IPL final, RCB fell short by eight runs to hand the title to SRH despite playing the final in their backyard, M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Rahul was dismissed for 11 by Ben Cutting while Virat Kohli’s 54-run did not help the cause. Chris Gayle also scored 76 runs for RCB in the match but no big partnership in the middle overs restricted Bengaluru to 200/7.

Despite being 114/0 in 10 overs at one stage, Virat’s side ran out of luck and lost their third IPL final. Virat also missed out on a historic 1000-mark and ended the season with 973 runs in 16 matches.
While much will depend on equations on the auction table, Rahul’s recent release from Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) has paved the way for speculations of his comeback to RCB. He represented the franchise from 2013 to 2016 before joining Punjab Kings and LSG.
