Story highlights

It started with a rumour online where reports stated that Tom Cruise wanted Glen Powell to take over as Ethan Hunt in future Mission Impossible films. Here's the whole truth.

Can Tom Cruise be replaced in Mission Impossible films in the future? For fans of Ethan Hunt and Tom Cruise in general, it’s a tricky question but if you believe online reports, the actor himself told someone at some point of time recently that he would like Glen Powell to take over his role in future films.

The Mission Impossible franchise has only ever had Tom Cruise take the lead as Ethan Hunt on a mission to save the world – in which he does his own stunts, however death-defying and dangerous they are. Over the years, Tom Cruise has built a reputation for himself as the man who does his own stunts – skydiving from a plane, jumping between mountains, riding on a train and much more.

What is the truth to these rumours?

As rumours picked up pace, ESPN commentator Pat McAfee called up Glen Powell himself to ask if it was true. On The Pat McAfee Show, the host FaceTimed Powell and read him the rumour, saying, “We just want to call and say congratulations, brother.”

Glen played it easy and subtly denied the rumours by saying, “My mom would never let me do that,” and then added that the “Mission: Impossible” franchise is the “worst gig in town, everybody knows that.”

He added, “That’s a death trap,” nodding to the fact that Tom Cruise performs his own stunts for the action series, including hanging off the side of a moving aeroplane, scaling the tallest building in the world and driving a motorcycle off of a cliff before parachuting down.

Before he hung up, Glen Powell added that he was currently working on the set of Edgar Wright’s The Running Man. He said, “It’s gonna be sick!”

About the Mission Impossible franchise

The latest, eighth instalment is titled Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning. The makers released the trailer for the film earlier today and the film is slated to release on May 23, 2025.

Tom Cruise and Glen Powell have meanwhile worked together on the 2022 release Top Gun: Maverick. Both Tom and Glen developed a strong bond and it’s been revealed that they worked on many of their stunts together.
