Is Meghan Markle Nigerian? After stunning us with her bright and colourful looks from her Nigeria visit with her husband Prince Harry, the estranged royal made news with her racial identity claims.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s recent trip to Nigeria has been in the news ever since the Duke and Duchess made their way to the African nation to promote Invictus Games. The duo has been spotted having a lot of fun while engaging in chats with the local people, participating in games and for Meghan, also exploring her roots.
Meghan Markle addressed exploring her racial identity and finding out that according to a genealogy test, the former actress and estranged royal has roots in Nigeria. She told the media that she recently found out that she is “43 per cent Nigerian” and that it was so late in her life that she got a chance to visit the country, but she was glad that it happened.
Meghan interacted with the people in Nigeria and put her best foot forward after keeping a somewhat low profile in the US. She called Nigeria “my country” to everyone’s amazement. Addressing the crowd at a women's event held at the World Trade Organisation in the capital, Abuja, Meghan expressed her gratitude and honour for the warm reception she and her husband received from the locals in Nigeria.
She was heard saying, "I want to start by saying thank you very much for just how gracious you've all been in welcoming my husband and I to this country… my country.”
So while she found out about her roots to Nigeria in 2022, courtesy her mother’s genes, she couldn’t follow it up with a visit. She however mentioned that she always wanted to explore her ancestral heritage.
Meghan Markle has previously spoken at length about being an African-American and what it meant early on in her life and career.
The first time possibly when she mentioned this, was in one of her Archetyped podcasts, when she said, “I'm going to start to dig deeper into all this because anybody that I've told, especially Nigerian women, are like 'What!'”

Meghan Markle is always dressed impeccably but it looks like she’s putting more effort to match up to the vibe of the people of Nigeria. Speaking to women in Nigeria, Meghan Markle said, "I am just flattered and honoured and inspired. It has been a whirlwind 24 hours since we arrived. And I very quickly got the memo that I need to wear more colour, so I can fit in with all of you and your incredible fashion."
