Despite growing concerns for the safety of healthcare professionals, a woman junior doctor at Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) in Tirupati was attacked by a patient, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by doctors in India.

The incident at Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences was captured by a CCTV camera in the hospital.

As per the CCTV footage, the attacker grabbed the doctor by her hair and banged her head on the steel frame of a hospital bed. Other doctors in the ward immediately came to their colleague's rescue and the attacker was overpowered and taken away.

Dr RV Kumar, the intern wrote a letter to the SVIMS director cum vice-chancellor, saying she was on duty in the Emergency Medicine Department on Saturday.

"I was unexpectedly attacked by a patient, Bangaru Raju, who approached me from behind, pulled my hair and began forcibly banging my head against the steel rod of a cot," she wrote, adding that no security personnel were present at the site to help her.

The intern doctor emphasised the need for improved workplace safety in light of the recent attack and said that the situation could have turned deadly if the patient had been armed. She demanded immediate action to enhance security measures and protect hospital staff.

Following the incident, the doctors of the hospital staged a protest and demanded safety at the workplace.

It may be mentioned here, the incident at the Andhra hospital comes weeks after the brutal rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College on August 9. 

The 31-year-old was raped and killed on duty. The brutal incident has sparked massive protests and doctors from several leading institutions across the country came to the streets to demand measures to ensure their safety at work.

The Supreme Court set up a 10-member National Task Force to recommend steps to prevent violence against doctors, ensuring safe working conditions for healthcare workers. The court has said the task force would prepare an action plan to prevent gender-based violence and ensure a dignified working space for doctors.
