Ratan Tata, the esteemed former chairman of Tata Group, passed away on Wednesday (Oct 9) at the age of 86 in a hospital in Mumbai. His legacy is characterised by visionary leadership, which will continue to inspire generations.

Ratan Tata's Birth

Ratan Tata was born on 28 December 1937 in Mumbai. He was the great-grandson of Jamsetji Tata, who founded the Tata Group.

He studied Bachelor's in Architecture at Cornell University and graduated in 1962 before he joined his family business.

Ratan Tata joins Tata Group

Ratan Tata joined the family business in 1962 and worked on the shop floor of Tata Steel. He served as chairman of the Tata Group from 1991-2012. He played a major role in the acquisition of Jaguar Land Rover and Corus Entertainment. Under his leadership, the Tata Group's revenue soared to over USD 100 billion by 2011-12.

Throughout his life, Ratan Tata received several accolades, including India's second-highest civilian award, Padma Vibhushan, in 2008.
