Updated: Nov 11, 2024, 01:45 PM(IST)

As Leonardo DiCaprio turns a year older today, here’s looking at some of his critically acclaimed films that deserved an Oscar instead of the Revenant for which he’s taken home his lone Best Actor award from The Academy Awards. From Wolf of Wall Street to Blood Diamond, these are some films that we loved him in and deserved some Oscar appreciation.

The Departed

Matrtin Scorsese’s best gangster movie to date, Leo’s role as an undercover cop in The Departed deserved an Oscar in our opinion. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg, Martin Sheen, Ray Winstone, Vera Farmiga and Alec Baldwin.

Catch Me If You Can

Directed by Steven Spielberg, and co-starring Tom Hanks, Leonardo, the film is quite a ride as the two play cat and mouse with Leo giving Tom a hard time while frauding people and mischievously disappearing before being caught. The film stars Leo as a young boy who navigates the world in his own way, not giving too much thought to the definitions of right and wrong.

Titanic

James Cameron’s Titanic was a masterpiece and a young Leo brought magic, charisma, pure romance on the screen opposite a young and beautiful Kate Winslet. Although Titanic swept The Academy Awards that year but we feel Leo deserved an award too for his brilliance on screen.

Django Unchained

It is unlike anything that Leonardo has done before. Playing slave owner Calvin Candie who is a vicious character, Leo mastered the role in Django Unchained -- where you hated him but loved his craft. Written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, the film stars Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington, Samuel L. Jackson, Walton Goggins, Dennis Christopher, James Remar, Michael Parks and Don Johnson.

Blood Diamond

In Blood Diamond, Leo plays a South African mercenary who at first pursues a priceless diamond amid the chaos of Sierra Leone's civil war only to learn the human cost attached to it and how it changes his outlook.

The Wolf of Wall Street

Leonardo DiCaprio's outrageous and very dramatised portrayal of the corrupt Wall Street trader makes the film worth a watch. It is high on pulse, will keep you on your edge, all while you detest his character and love everything about the film on a Wall Street broker turned fraudster millionaire.

Inception

Christopher Nolan's Inception is not an easy watch, it doesn't come easily to you as it takes a couple of watches to understand the depth of the story and what the filmmaker tried to tell -- much like the story itself. Inception is a science-fiction thriller about a thief who implants ideas into the subconscious minds of his target.

The Great Gatsby

In The Great Gatsby, Leo DiCaprio plays a famous millionaire, Jay Gatsby. The film was co-written and directed by Baz Luhrmann. The movie is about the love and obsession of a millionaire for a woman called Daisy, who he had hoped to marry once, but who gets married to someone else.
