Story highlights

PR Sreejesh capped off his incredible career with his second bronze medal in Paris, while Neeraj won the silver medal in the javelin throw final while battling his groin injury.

PR Sreejesh is named the Indian contingent’s second flag bearer at the Paris Olympics 2024 closing ceremony, joining ace shooter and two-time medallist Manu Bhaker, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) announced on Friday (August 9). PR Sreejesh won his second Olympic bronze medal on Thursday (August 8), with India beating Spain 2-1 in the men's hockey.

The IOA president, PT Usha, said the Indian hockey veteran was an emotional and popular choice within the IOA leadership, including the Chef de Mission Gagan Narang and the Indian contingent.

“Sreejesh has served Indian hockey in particular and Indian sport in general admirably through more than two decades,” PT Usha said.

The former face of Indian athletics, PT Usha, added she even spoke with javelin hero and Paris Games silver medallist Neeraj Chopra about his thoughts over picking Sreejesh.

Chopra, who stood second in his second Summer Games, agreed immediately with Sreejesh’s name as the joint flag bearer for the Closing Ceremony on Sunday (August 11).

“I spoke with Neeraj Chopra and appreciate the spontaneity and grace with which he agreed that Sreejesh should be the flag bearer at the closing ceremony,” PT Usha continued. “He told me ‘Ma’am, even if you had not asked me, I would have suggested Sree bhai’s name’. It is reflective of the immense respect Neeraj has for Sreejesh and his contribution to Indian sport.”

Bhaker, Sreejesh – the heroes

Considering nearly half a dozen fourth-place finishes for several athletes across different disciplines at the Paris Olympics 2024, the Indian contingent has had a tough time at this Summer Games. However, there are a few moments to cherish, including five medals won thus far, with three coming in shooting and one each in the men’s hockey and javelin throw, respectively.

Meanwhile, Manu Bhaker, 22, made headlines at her second Games by winning two medals (bronze) in a single edition, becoming the first Indian and female shooter from the country to achieve this milestone. For what she achieved and made India proud with her achievements, the IOA decided to name her the flag bearer earlier.
