Vinesh won all her bouts on Tuesday (August 6), becoming the first Indian female wrestler to reach the finals at the Summer Games, but on D-day, she got disqualified for failing the mandatory weight test. Several athletes, including former Olympians, thanked her for her services to the country while expressing shock over her retirement.
Ace Indian grappler Vinesh Phogat announced her retirement from wrestling a day after being disqualified for being overweight (by just 100 grams) in her weight category (women’s 50 kg) at the Paris Olympics 2024.

Several athletes, including former Olympians, thanked her for her services to the country while expressing shock over her retirement.
Taking to social media, Vinesh wrote, “Mother, wrestling beat me, I lost. Your dream and my courage are all broken. I don’t have any more strength now. Goodbye Wrestling 2001-2024. I will forever be in your debt.”

Although she was on the cusp of creating history for India in Paris by winning a silver medal at the least, Vinesh lost her chance of bagging any medal due to the Olympic rules.
Each backroom staff member of the wrestling contingent did their best to ensure Vinesh trimmed the extra weight (2 kg) recorded after the semis tie; however, owing to time limitations and considering avoiding putting her health at risk, they decided to stop the process at one point, where despite everyone’s efforts, she was 100 grams overweight.
Per the latest reports, Vinesh and the Indian contingent have appealed against the disqualification with the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the verdict of which will take some time to come out.
Till then, let’s check out how the social media reacted to Vinesh’s retirement announcement.
