Per BWF General Competition Regulations for group stage play, the result of that match will not be counted, leaving Lakshya to play three games in total, while the remaining two players in Group L will play just two.
Ace Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen had his win in the first round of the men’s singles competition (against Kevin Cordon from Guatemala) ‘deleted' after his opponent withdrew from the showpiece event due to a left elbow injury.
Per BWF General Competition Regulations for group stage play, the result of that match will not be counted, leaving Lakshya to play three games in total, while the remaining two players in Group L will play just two.
"Guatemalan men's singles player Kevin Cordon has withdrawn from the Paris 2024 Olympic Games Badminton Competition due to a left elbow injury," the Badminton World Federation (BWF) said in an update.
"His remaining Group L matches against Indonesia's Jonatan Christie (Court 2, 2 pm local time, 29 July 2024) and Julien Carraggi of Belgium (Court 3, 'Not Before' 9.20 am local time, 31 July 2024) will not be played. Matches on these courts in each respective session have been rescheduled.
"As per BWF General Competition Regulations for group stage play, the results of all matches played, or yet to be played, involving Cordon in Group L are now considered deleted," the BWF added.
Following Lakshya's win in his maiden Olympic group game in Paris, he will be in action in Group L, taking on Julien Carraggi on Monday (at 5:30 PM IST), with his final match coming against Jonatan Christie on Wednesday.
Following Cordon’s withdrawal from the Games, Group L is now considered a three-player group, with Sen, Carraggi and Christie fighting for the one pre-quarter spot.
Per the head-to-head tally, Lakshya leads ranked number 52 Carraggi 2-0, while against ranked number 3 Christie on BWF rankings, Lakshya trails by 1-4.
Although his win in the first game could have given Lakshya a window and points to fight for a spot in the next round, his match against Christie will determine his future in the Paris Games.
