On February 1, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the budget for India, the third largest economy in Asia and one of the largest emerging economies in the world.
According to the Economic Survey tabled in parliament ahead of the budget, India is likely to regain its stature as the world’s fastest growing economy. It forecast economic growth of 8-8.5 per cent for the fiscal year 2022-23.
But the Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted India's growth story since 2020.
Sitharaman holds the record for delivering the longest budget speech: 2 hours and 42 minutes on February 1, 2020. This is her fourth straight Union Budget , which is the financial statements and tax proposals for fiscal year 2022-23 (April 2022 to March 2023).
The budget this year will be 'paperless' and will be available on a government app.
For the common citizen, the budget is important for knowing what goods and services will become cheaper or dearer. For the other stakeholders in the economy, particularly various industries, the sops in budget will be crucial in their growth path.
As always, a slew of social welfare measures are also likely to be announced by Sitharaman, only the second woman to have presented India's budget, the first one being former prime minister Indira Gandhi.
