Joe Biden is the 46th President of the United States of America, who won the presidency after defeating Republican President Donald Trump in 2020
He has earlier served as 47th Vice President of the United States from 2009 to 2017 during the Obama administration. From a political journey of over 40 years to becoming the presidential nominee of the Democrats, let's take a look at all the details of Biden that you want to know.
Biden was born on November 20, 1942, in Scranton, Pennsylvania. His family faced a financial crisis and it took several years for Biden's father to become a successful car salesman in order to give his family financial stability. As a child, Biden was nicknamed as "Dash" because of his stutter. Biden attended the Archmere Academy after his family moved to Claymont, Delaware.
Biden completed his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Delaware in 1965, where he studied history, political science and played football. He also earned a law degree in 1968 from Syracuse University in New York.
Biden is the eldest child of Eugenia "Jean" Biden and Joseph Robinette Biden Sr. and two younger brothers and a sister. In 1972, post a major political accomplishment, he experienced a terrible loss at a personal level. In that year, Biden ran for the Senate against popular Republican incumbent J. Caleb Boggs. In a tight race, Biden successfully won the election. However, after some time and a week before Christmas in the same year, Biden lost his wife and daughter in a car accident, which also severely injured his sons, Beau and Hunter.
In 1977, Biden tied the knot with Jill and was blessed by a daughter, Ashley in 1981. Biden was struck by another personal loss after Beau, who was seen as the rising star of young Democrats, died of brain cancer in 2016.
Biden after becoming a Senator in 1972, became the fifth-youngest in the history of the US. The highlight of his more than four decades-long political career was from 2008-2016 when he served as the Vice President of the US. It was during this time, that then outgoing president Obama also honoured him in 2017 with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honour, calling him "the best vice president America's ever had" and a "lion of American history".
This comes after Biden's national security adviser Jack Sullivan said that the US President was expected to rendew the Gaza ceasefire talks on November 27.
